Ihram – The State of Purity
Before crossing the Miqat, men wear two white unstitched cloths and women wear modest clothing. You declare your intention (niyyah) and recite: ‘Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk…’
Tawaf – Circling the Kaaba
Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, pilgrims walk seven times counter-clockwise around the Kaaba.
Sa’i – Walking Between Safa and Marwah
Pilgrims walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, just like Hagar, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), in search of water.
Mina – Day of Rest and Prayer (8th Dhul Hijjah)
Pilgrims travel to Mina, a tent city, and spend the night in prayer and reflection.
Arafat – The Core of Hajj (9th Dhul Hijjah)
This is the most important day. Pilgrims gather at the Plain of Arafat for the Khutbah (sermon) and make Dua until sunset.
Muzdalifah – Collecting Pebbles
After sunset, pilgrims head to Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha, and collect 49 or 70 pebbles for the next ritual.
Ramy al-Jamarat – Stoning the Devil
Back in Mina, pilgrims throw pebbles at three pillars (Jamarat) that symbolize Satan’s temptation of Prophet Ibrahim.
Qurbani – Animal Sacrifice
On Eid al-Adha, an animal is sacrificed to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son.
Tawaf al-Ifadah and Hair Cutting
Another Tawaf is performed, and men shave or trim their hair; women cut a small portion.
Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada)
Before leaving Mecca, pilgrims perform a final circumambulation of the Kaaba.
